Analysis of the restaurant review

Today, I will analyze restaurant reviews of Bubba Gump Shrimp Co and Be Our Guest restaurant.

The first one is Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/food-and-drink/reviews/bubba-gump-shrimp-co-restaurant-review-a-cavernous-deepfried-hokey-simulacrum-9901411.html

While reading, I decided to highlight 4 points:

1. surroundings/description of restaurant’s atmosphere

2. opinions expressed by the reviewer

3. food menus

4. how waitresses/waiters are dressed or comfort themselves

Here are some of the examples:

1.

- “themed seafood restaurant which operates in a kind of fictional dreamspace.”

- “conjure a feel-good leisure experience out of a downbeat, disturbing movie dealing with disability, prejudice, war, mutilation, cancer, and bereavement.”

- “Every surface is covered with folksy gewgaws, inspirational Gump quotes and replica memorabilia.”

2.

- “a Cavernous, deep-fried, hokey simulacrum”: word choice.

- “Even nastier is chipotle-crusted tilapia (£15.75), a mushy heap of indeterminate white fish loaded with some kind of paste reeking of garlic and onion powder.”: the word ‘nastier’

- The brownie is as cloying and pasty as fudge icing, and the chocolate chip sundae is rejected for being too sweet – by an eight-year-old.”: Getting rejected by kids who love sweets shows opinion.

- “The soft drinks, too, are sickly”: the word ‘sickly’

- “Bubba Gump must be the worst place in London to bring someone you're planning to break up with.”

- “behave yourself or we'll take you back to Bubba Gump.”: This shows that the place is described as a punishment place meaning, it’s horrible

3.

- “101 varieties of breaded seafood, plus a vast range of sandwiches, tacos, and burgers. But the focus is on shrimp – shrimp gumbo, Cajun shrimp, Shrimp New Orleans, coconut shrimp (their shrimp, to be clear, is what we Brits call prawns). There's a Deep South theme, and many of the dishes reference the film, such as the enticing 'Bubba's After the Storm Bucket of Boat Trash'.”

- Calamari bites

- Lobster rolls

4.

- “smiles from the staff are genuine”: this doesn’t show how they’re dressed but this sounds like staff enjoys working there.

- “pounce on anyone celebrating a birthday.”: love celebrating birthdays

At the end of the review, Tracey rated 4 categories out of 5 stars.

Food *

Ambience (for a child’s party) *****

Ambience (for a break-up) *

I will answer some of the questions:

Q. What is focused on in the review?

It focuses on the experience (daytime/nighttime, magical dining experience), atmosphere (3 different dining rooms), food (kids menu, desserts)

Q. How does it differ from the written review in presentation and content?

The written review didn’t offer visuals like photos while the video review gave a tour of the restaurant so it made me feel like I was at Disney. For the written review, you have to imagine the atmosphere with the words described by the reviewer.  Content-wise, the video review didn’t talk about the staff and how they feel working. And the biggest difference is that the written reviewer disliked Bubba Gump Shrimp Co restaurant while the video reviewer loved or was promoting Be Our Guest restaurant and even called it a truly magical dining experience that only Disney can deliver.

Q. What features does it have in common with it?

Both talk about the food menu, atmosphere, and experiences you get. The opinion of the reviewer as well but less for video, and written had more.

Q. Is the video review neutral or partisan?

Partisan / Promotion

Overall, if I were to write a written review, I need to make sure I add these; photos, a detailed description of the atmosphere, how the food tastes and are they reasonable prices, how staff are dressed, and who should go.
